Jim Ellis. These are photos of his boxcar and he also explains his finishing techniques.

"As for my techniques, I stain the wood strips before cutting to final size with several
alternate washes of Builders in Scale "Silverwood" and some brown shoe dye/alcohol mix.
After drying, I sloppily brushpaint on the base color (Winsor Newton "Indian Red" oil paint,
dry, I brush off some of the base color along the bottom edges of the car with acetone to
expose the underlying wood stains. I add another wash of stain to the exposed areas. After
the car has the details added, I lightly air brush Polly Scale Grimey Black along the upper
third to simulate soot and Polly Scale Earth along the bottom third to simulate dirt. The final
step is to brush a little Bragdon weathering powder onto the details." - Jim Ellis
